Overview
StockMarket.et is Ethiopia's leading platform for capital market, business, and finance news. It delivers a sophisticated blend of economic journalism, real-time data widgets (Birr exchange rates, commodity prices), and financial education. The platform includes Biritu, an LMS for financial literacy and capital market education, offering courses from beginner to advanced levels. An AI chatbot supports Amharic, English, Afan Oromo, and Tigrigna, and an AI news translator delivers content in these languages. The platform demonstrates that CMS-based systems can be optimized for scale and professional-grade performance when handled with technical precision.
Challenge
The primary technical hurdle was transactional concurrency. We needed to ensure that real-time data widgets (Birr exchange rates, commodity prices) updated instantly without overloading the database, while simultaneously delivering a personalized newsletter to tens of thousands of subscribers without performance degradation. Standard off-the-shelf solutions could not meet the dual demands of real-time data freshness and high-volume newsletter distribution.
Solution
We deployed a highly customized WordPress architecture, stripping away legacy overhead and implementing deep-level object caching and database indexing. We developed a bespoke PHP distribution engine for high-volume newsletters and integrated a headless-style data fetching layer in JavaScript for the real-time tickers. The platform includes Biritu, a full-featured LMS for financial literacy and capital market education, built on a modular, future-proof design.
